LAHORE:

Police claimed to have arrested a man allegedly involved in the sexual assault of a 23-year-old mentally challenged woman in the Kot Lakhpat area, officials confirmed on Thursday.

Police said an FIR was registered on November 14 after the incident came to light when the victim was brought to Lahore General Hospital a day earlier in an unconscious state by an unidentified man, who fled immediately after leaving her there.

DIG Operations Faisal Kamran took notice of the case and formed a special investigation team.

Police later traced and arrested the suspect, identified as Munawar Nauman, alias Nomi, in an operation led by SP Model Town Shehr Bano Naqvi.

Investigators said the suspect had rented a quarter near Bostan Colony, Chungi Amar Sidhu, where he allegedly lured the woman before assaulting her.

CCTV footage from the hospital purportedly shows him bringing the victim in and leaving shortly afterward.

Police also revealed that the victim’s medical examination confirmed she is pregnant. The suspect has been handed over to the Gender Crime Cell for further investigation.

DIG Kamran commended the arresting team and directed that appreciation certificates be issued to ASP Model Town Kashmala Farooq and SHO Kot Lakhpat.

Earlier, Punjab Women Protection Authority Chairperson Hina Pervaiz Butt visited the victim at Lahore General Hospital, met the family and assured them of full legal, medical, and psychological support.

She instructed hospital authorities to ensure uninterrupted treatment and asked police to secure all evidence from the crime scene and expedite the inquiry.
