‘Marty Supreme’ premieres amid fanfare

Timothée Chalamet was greeted like a rock star at the Paris premiere of Marty Supreme at Le Grand Rex on February 3, 2026, donning a brown Givenchy suit and sunglasses.
Speaking from the stage, Chalamet jokingly addressed the high ticket prices, saying, “I know you were charged a lot. It has nothing to do with me! I’m not getting any money from it, I would have liked for it to be free,” referencing the €50 ($60) reserved seats sold for the event.
The A24 film marks another career milestone for Chalamet, whose performance as hustling table tennis champ Marty Reisman earned him his first Golden Globe win and an Oscar nomination. Chalamet also took time to praise France’s rich cinephile culture, speaking French to the audience alongside director Josh Safdie and co-producer Ron Bronstein. “There is a big cinema culture in France,” he said. “Even if the film is successful in the United States, it’s a miracle movie.”
Safdie, who is nominated for Best Director at the Oscars, emphasized that the role of Marty Reisman was written specifically for Chalamet. He recalled meeting Chalamet in his early 20s and being struck by the actor’s vision and determination. “I met Timmy Supreme. He could see the world, he could see the arts, but he was so far away. He needed to be at the center,” Safdie said.
Marty Supreme will release in France on February 18 through Metropolitan FilmExport. The premiere highlighted both Chalamet’s growing international appeal and the enthusiasm of French audiences for high-quality cinema, cementing the actor’s reputation as a global star.
Fans and critics alike are eagerly anticipating the film’s wider release, with Chalamet’s performance expected to continue generating award buzz.
Safdie and co-writer Bronstein began developing the film in 2018 after Safdie was gifted a copy of Marty Reisman’s 1974 memoir, The Money Player: The Confessions of America’s Greatest Table Tennis Champion and Hustler. Safdie met with Chalamet in 2018 and offered him the lead role. Following a multi-year development period, the project was officially announced in July 2024; it marks Safdie’s first solo directorial effort since The Pleasure of Being Robbed (2008). Cinematographer Darius Khondji shot the film on 35 mm film stock, and Safdie’s regular collaborator Daniel Lopatin composed its score. Production design was led by Jack Fisk.
Marty Supreme premiered as a “secret screening” at the 2025 New York Film Festival on October 6, 2025, followed by a U.S. theatrical release by A24 on December 25, where it received widespread acclaim.
The National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named it one of the top ten films of the year. The film has grossed $124 million worldwide, becoming A24’s third-highest-grossing film. It received nine nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Safdie) and Best Actor (Chalamet) and eleven at the 79th British Academy Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Director (Safdie), Best Actor (Chalamet) and Best Supporting Actress (A’zion). It also earned three nominations at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards and 32nd Actor Awards. Chalamet won a Golden Globe Award and Critics’ Choice Award for his performance.
