New ‘Planet of the Apes’ film in works

Matt Shakman takes the helm with writer Josh Friedman for next chapter in sci-fi franchise

A new instalment in the long-running ‘Planet of the Apes’ franchise is in development, with filmmaker Matt Shakman set to direct and produce the project for 20th Century Studios, marking his latest move following his work on Marvel’s ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’.

Shakman will collaborate with screenwriter Josh Friedman, who has previously worked on both ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’. The new film’s plot details remain under wraps, but the project signals a continuation of the studio’s investment in the enduring science fiction saga centred on intelligent primates challenging human dominance.

The most recent entry, ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’, proved commercially successful, earning nearly $400 million worldwide against a reported $160 million budget. Over the past 15 years, the modern reboot series has collectively generated more than $2 billion globally, reinforcing its status as a major box office property.

Alongside Shakman, producers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are attached to the new film, with Scott Aversano overseeing the project for the studio.

Shakman’s directing credits span both film and television, including the critically acclaimed series ‘WandaVision’, as well as work on shows such as ‘Succession’, ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’. His experience in large-scale storytelling is expected to shape the next phase of the ‘Apes’ franchise.

Friedman, meanwhile, has established a strong relationship with the studio, having contributed to major projects including ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ and the upcoming ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’.

The announcement signals continued momentum for the franchise, which remains one of Hollywood’s most durable science fiction properties, as studios increasingly lean on established cinematic universes with proven global appeal.
