VENTURA:

Pop star Britney Spears admitted to reckless driving involving alcohol in a plea deal on Monday, allowing her to avoid jail in a case stemming from her arrest earlier this year in California.

The 44-year-old singer, best known for hits such as ‘…Baby One More Time’ and ‘Toxic’, had originally been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) after police reported erratic driving on a Ventura County freeway in March. Under the agreement, the more serious charge was reduced to reckless driving involving alcohol, drugs or both.

Spears was sentenced to 12 months’ probation by a Ventura County court. Her lawyer, Michael Goldstein, said the outcome reflected both legal considerations and her recent efforts to address personal challenges.

“She’s going to do well, and we all root for Britney,” Goldstein told reporters outside court. “I don’t think anybody’s happy about pleading guilty to anything, but under the circumstances and to get this behind her, I think everybody is pleased with the result.”

Spears was not present at the hearing, which her legal team attended on her behalf. Authorities said she had been stopped after reports of a driver speeding and behaving erratically. Officers later cited signs of impairment, although prosecutors did not specify the substances allegedly involved.

As part of the plea agreement, the singer must complete a substance abuse education programme and continue regular mental health treatment, including therapy sessions and psychiatric consultations. The court also ordered that she must hold valid prescriptions for any medication in her possession and comply with strict conditions if stopped by law enforcement.

Officials said the reduced charge was consistent with cases involving no prior DUI record, no collision, and a demonstrated willingness to seek treatment. A conviction on the original charge could have resulted in a significantly longer probation period and possible jail time for repeat violations.

The case marks the latest chapter in a turbulent personal history that has often overshadowed Spears’s music career. After achieving global fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s, she experienced a highly publicised breakdown in 2007 that led to a long-running conservatorship overseen by her father, Jamie Spears.

The arrangement, which controlled key aspects of her finances and personal life, was dissolved in 2021 following intense public scrutiny and the #FreeBritney movement. Since then, Spears has maintained a lower public profile, though she has continued to draw attention through her memoir ‘The Woman in Me’ and intermittent social media activity.

In that memoir, published in 2023, Spears denied having a drinking problem or using hard drugs, while acknowledging past use of prescription medication including Adderall. For now, the resolution offers the singer a chance to move past the case, though it once again places her personal struggles in the public spotlight.
