Citizens step in to save Karachi’s ‘Kitab Ghar’

KARACHI:

Karachi’s citizen-run library ‘Kitab Ghar’ has been pulled back from the brink of closure after an extraordinary wave of public donations met and far exceeded its fundraising target within minutes, underscoring the depth of community support for the initiative.

Earlier this week, the management issued an urgent appeal, warning that rising rent had made it increasingly difficult to sustain operations at the current location. Around Rs500,000 was needed to cover relocation costs and keep the library running.

What followed was a rapid and overwhelming response. “We posted the first call for funds in the midst of planning our sabbatical, but you guys stopped us in our tracks,” the organisers wrote on Instagram, adding, “We met the fundraising goal in 53 MINUTES, and in three days, you TRIPLED it.”

Donations poured in from across Pakistan and abroad through multiple local payment channels as well as international platforms. Contributions varied widely, from as little as Rs500 to as high as $1,350, reflecting a broad base of support for the library. The surge in backing has also created breathing space on the operational front. According to the management, discussions are under way with the landlord after an unnamed supporter stepped in, raising the possibility that the library may continue at its current premises for another 11 months.

“Kitab Ghar Karachi isn’t going anywhere… for now,” the team noted, adding that renegotiations are in progress while they explore a more sustainable long-term location to ensure continuity without disruption. With immediate concerns eased, the organisers are now looking to maintain engagement with their supporters. “We have every reason to celebrate, and we will,” the Instagram post read, teasing upcoming programmes “that help keep the lights on in YOUR public library.”

Expressing gratitude, the management credited the community for securing the library’s future, at least in the short term. “Thank you for saving Kitab Ghar,” they wrote, adding, “It’s an honour to serve every one of you.”
