Meryl Streep discovers she’s related to Anna Wintour, calls her ‘the bomb’

Actor says she learnt about connection last week after her kids spotted it on genealogy site
Actors Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway spoke with Complex about The Devil Wears Prada 2, with Streep also addressing her rumoured connection to Vogue‘s former editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
Regarding the rumoured family connection between Streep and Wintour, the interviewer asked, “I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but you guys are distant cousins?” Streep replied, “I just found that out last week,” adding that “it was on some genealogy thing — and then the internet. I’m not on the internet, so I don’t know — but my kids said, ‘Mom, we’re related to Anna Wintour.’”
According to the interview, they share the same fifth great-grandparents.
The interview also discussed Streep and Vintour’s May Vogue cover: “The Vogue cover with Anna Wintour was iconic,” the interviewer noted. Reflecting on the shoot, Streep said, “Oh yeah, there was a standout moment. We shot a little thing going into the elevator. We did a little video as well as the cover. She is so funny.”
“So funny,” Hathaway agreed.
Streep added on Wintour, “She’s got great timing. Well, look at her at the Academy Awards with you,” Streep added, referring to a viral clip from a recent Academy Awards ceremony, where Hathaway and Wintour presented an award.
In the moment, Hathaway asked Wintour what she thought of her dress, only for Wintour to ignore the question and move on to the nominees, prompting comparisons to the Devil Wears Prada‘s Miranda Priestly.
“Yeah, that punchline — that was all her,” Hathaway said while Streep added, “She’s the bomb.
Wintour and Streep reunited for the May 2026 cover of Vogue, photographed by Annie Leibovitz, celebrating the 20-year legacy of The Devil Wears Prada.
